SOMATIC EMDR
Trauma lives in the nervous system
Somatic EMDR supports your brain and body in safely processing what feels stuck so you can move from coping to integration.
In these sessions somatic EMDR interventions are integrated with traditional yoga therapy practices to help you work through trauma stored in the body.
when talking is not enough…
You’ve done therapy.
You’ve read the books.
You know where it comes from.
And yet:
• Your body still reacts
• You shut down or over-function
• You feel triggered by things that “shouldn’t” matter
• You feel disconnected from yourself
• You live with high-functioning depression beneath the surface
That’s because trauma is not just cognitive, it is also physiological.
Somatic EMDR informed yoga therapy works with the nervous system and not against it.
What is somatic emdr?
Somatic EMDR is an integrative trauma therapy approach that combines body-based awareness with bilateral stimulation methods used in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
Rather than only revisiting memories through conversation, this approach:
• Supports nervous system regulation
• Uses bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess unresolved experiences
• Incorporates body tracking and somatic awareness
• Moves at a pace that prioritizes safety and consent
The goal is not to relive trauma.
The goal is integration.
This work helps the brain and body update old survival responses that are no longer needed.
Why this approach?
As a trauma-informed yoga therapist who integrates somatic EMDR interventions into my practices, I noticed that traditional trauma therapy can sometimes stay too focused on the cognitive. The somatic approach, however, centers the body from start to finish.
This embodied work helps build regulation before processing, tracks activation in real time, offers grounding and resourcing tools, and honours consent and nervous system pacing allowing clients to integrate beyond the session.
